Walt Hammond Wins a Wild Sportsman Modified Main Event
Walt Hammond Wins a Wild Sportsman Modified Main Event
For Immediate Release BRS-042918-1
Mekkelsen RV night at Bear Ridge Speedway proved to be an exciting and entertaining night with drivers taking wild rides in multiple divisions, lots of side by side action and the ever popular kids rides.
The Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds found a new face on top as Walt Hammond led all but the first lap of the wild main event to take the win. Richie Simmons and Robert Tucker spent most of the first half of the race stalking Hammond for the lead. A caution on lap 19 for Walt Hammond’s son, Walter J Hammond who ended up on his roof in turn one the changed the pace of the race. Just one lap after the green reappeared Richie Simmons got turned around while battling Ryan Christian for second with both drivers restarting from the rear. 10 laps and a couple of cautions later leader Walt Hammond and Adam Pierson tangled while battling for the lead with Pierson headed to the rear for the restart. Four laps later Richie Simmons got turned once again, this time on the backstretch and ended up on his side with four other cars involved. From there the race went green with Walt Hammond taking the win. Robert Tucker ran up front all night and finished second with Kevin Chaffee third. Adam Pierson came back to finish fourth with Terry Williams fifth.
Kelly Miller took full advantage of his pole position start in the C.A. Miller Limited Late Models, building a big lead in the non-stop Feature to take the first win of his career and stopping the season long win streak of Ryan Christian, who finished a distant second. Jesse Durkee was third with George Osgood fourth and Hunter Nutter fifth.
It was madness night for the Weglarz Property Services Four cylinders with an extra $2700.00 on the line. The race was run in two 24-lap segments with Bobby Bell winning the first segment and Jesse Durkee winning the second segment with the overall win going to defending champion Jesse Durkee. Bobby Bell was second with Dennis Perry third with Jason Porter and Buddy Welch rounding out the top five.
The WYKR Sprint Cars of New England made their second appearance of the season and didn’t disappoint. Kevin Chaffee took the lead at the onset of the event and led until lap thirteen when Will Hull took command. Chaffee would slowly fall back through the field with a mechanical issue while Jake Williams and Matt Hoyt would move into the top three. At the checkers it was Will Hull taking win followed by Jake Williams, Matt Hoyt, Jordan Fornwalt and Lacey Hanson.
The Granite State Mini Sprints were making their first appearance of the season with Eric Relation winning the 500cc Main event and Zach Herbert best in the 600cc Feature
Unfortunately the Wells River Chevrolet DIRTcar Sportsman Coupes were not able to run their feature this week as the nightly time curfew hit before they could compete. Their event will be first on the docket next week.
