The Fairlee Flyer Kevin Chaffee flies from 23rd to 3rd as Ryan Christian claims his first career win in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds
For Immediate Release BRS-060615-1
BRADFORD, VT – Ryan Christian Canaan NH survived several restarts holding off the hard charges of Mike Gendron Newbury VT to claim his first career win in the Bond Auto DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds. Gendron was waiting for one slip from Christian, as the laps ticked off but Christian held firm to the bottom of the track. Leaving Gendron nowhere to go but on the outside. Gendron’s car was also strong on the bottom, and thus figured 2nd was better than last, ready to try again another day. The one who did make it work on the outside in dominate fashion, and hoping for another 10 laps was the “Fairlee Flyer” Kevin Chaffee, Bradford VT. Chaffee having missed qualifying by one position found himself looking from the 23rd position of the field thru a very long line of cars to the front. Never one to give up Chaffee tested the waters on the outside groove, and began to sail to the front. Laps would be his enemy this night as time would run out before he could set challenge on the front two. Chaffee happily claimed the third and final victory lane spot of the night. Jason Gray and Adam Pierson rounded out the top five.
The night’s activities sponsored by Mekkelsen RV included a makeup race for the Crazy Ed’s Limited Late Models from the weeks before rain shortened Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank night. Coming home the winner once again was Brandon Gray E Thetford VT with Eric Lang Groton VT and James Fadden Plainfield NH accompanying him to victory lane. Also in the house were the Granite State Mini Sprints with the 500 and 600 cc’s competing for wins. In the 500’s the 96 Tom Chaffee claimed the win and in the 600’s it was Kyle Belliveau. The final addition to the evening was the ever popular kids rides, offered twice a year at the Ridge. During intermission the stands emptied onto the track to gain access to the drivers of their choice for some laps around the ¼ mile clay oval.
The Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes continue to see the Brass Ring challenge grow as they underwent a rough start to the night with several cautions slowing down the pace. When they finally got their groove going Jason Colbeth found himself on the point. Bob Shepard worked his way from mid pack to the the runner up spot but was unable to make the move for the win. Tim Hodge struggling a bit this year with set up was finally able to have a good finish coming home in the final victory lane spot. Matt Ellsworth and Josh Harrington completed the top five.
The USAC DMA Midgets returns for competition Saturday June 13th on Jiffy Mart of Bradford night.
The picture changed a bit for the second feature event of the night for the Crazy Ed’s Limited Late Models, with a new face claiming the checkers. Brandon Gray having mechanical issues, was unable to make it to victory lane. Taking advantage of his misfortune was James Fadden who grabbed the win with Eric Lang coming home in second and Matt Lashua grabbing another third place finish.
It was all about the madness for the Weglarz Property Service/F.M.S. Auto Parts Four Cylinders as the field of twenty three competitors competed for double points and over Three Thousand dollars in three seventeen lap segments. The annual Monza event for each of the divisions offers an opportunity for the drivers to grab some extra green and lots of racing. The first segment started with Charlie Lakin on the pole having garnered 30 laps to claim the honors. Lakin stayed the point for the first segment which means he started in the rear for the second. The second segment was a tough one for the guys and gals with several of the competitors not on the track when the checkers waived. Honors of the checkers were claimed by Matt Boucher, who then had the pleasure of starting from the rear in the last segment. The final segment with a smaller field of cars, but still plenty of racing was claimed by the rookie sensation Justin Severance. While everyone wants to win the battle setting your sites on winning the war is sometimes more advantageous. Mike Ryan Lakin’s number one rival for the championship recorded a third, second, and third place finish making him the overall winner. Lakin with a first, fourth, and fifth finish took second overall and Boucher with a fourth, first, and seventh place finish took third. Fourth overall went to Severance with Jesse Durkee rounding out the top five.
