Elms two Mother Nature zero. Again, Elms takes the window of opportunity and gets the show in, despite the spring Nor’easter creeping in across the area. The first green waved at our infamous 6:00 pm(ish) and the night was recorded in the record books before the rains settled in with track conditions once again perfect for some great racing excitement.
The pounding thunder of the Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds put on a show to keep you poised on the edge of your seat for forty laps. Mike Dunn grabbed the lead from his third-place starting position on lap three and held of the hard charges of Robert Tucker for several laps. By lap sixteen Tucker was over taken by Trevor Rocke who started hounding of Dunn. A restart on lap twenty showed Dunn still at point but the second row consisted of a new player who had been working his way to the front from mid pack alongside Rocke. Dunn was able to hold on for one more lap before falling prey to Ryan Christian. Christian got by Dunn on lap twenty-two. Christian held on to the top spot for the rest of the event surviving a few more cautions along the way. Dunn found himself slipping back to forth just one spot shy of victory lane as Todd Buckwold got by him on lap 39 for the third-place spot. Trevor Rocke came home in second. Derek Graham rounded out the top five.
The Wells River Chevrolet DIRTcar Sportsman Coupes are offering some great racing right of the box this year. The full field took the green but were unable to get the first lap as caution waved for contact with the second and third place cars of the starting grid. When the green waved again Earl Maxham from his advantage pole position got the lead, pulling away from the field. A couple more cautions slowed the pace with every restart seeing Maxham able to hold on to the point. When the white waved on lap twenty-nine it looked as those Maxham had this one all wrapped up. But in racing “it aint over till it’s over” and Brian Chaffee knowing he was about out of time having followed Maxham for the past 9 laps, saw an opportunity and took it. Chaffee stealing the spot from Maxham got to the checkers first, leaving Maxham shaking his head wondering what just happened crossing the line in second. Coming home in third for his second victory lane visit in as many weeks was Melvin Pierson. Thomas Placey and Gene Pierson with his second fifth place finish rounded out the top five.
Laquerre’s Sports USAC DMA Midgets were off and return May 20th
The C.A. Miller Limited Late Models struggling with car counts still are able to give the fans a show. This week Ryan Christian doing double duty in this and the Sportsman Modifieds came home first with Wayland Childs in second and Don Reynolds in third.
A weird start for Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinders gave Jason Porter hailing all the way from Maine the pole position on the immediate restart. Porter hungry for his first win, experiencing lots of difficulties in 2016 wasn’t about to look that gift horse in the mouth. Porter bided his time driving smart survived two restarts and was able to hold off last week’s winner to grab his first win the four cylinders. Jesse Durkee hoping to be crowned the champ in 2017 coming off the opening night win would have to settle for second a swap in the finish last week. Buddy Welch came home in the final victory lane final spot. David Durkee Jr and Bobby Bell finished out the top five.
The WYKR Sprint Cars of New England made their first of ten visits to the Ridge. The field was brought to the green by Tyler Austin and Lacey Hanson. Austin grabbed the point and held on for five laps. On lap six Will Hull from third took over the lead and went on to grab the win. Austin held on to second until lap seventeen when Kevin Chaffee got by him for the runner up spot. Chaffee was unable to get by Hull and would have to settle for the second victory lane spot. Austin was able to salvage the final victory lane spot crossing the line in third. Clay Dow and Jacob Williams rounded out the top five.
