Alan Hammond gets his first win in the Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds Chris LaForest patiently gets the win in the Wells River Chevrolet DIRTcar Sportsman Coupes Bear Ridge Speedway’s 3rd event of 50th season of racing.
For Immediate Release BRS-052117-1
A Crisp clear night has plenty of hot racing on the track with a record number Sportsman Coupes on hand and Late Model numbers tripled from prior weeks.
The Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds were on their game tonight putting on a show to remember solidifying why they are the top premier division of the Ridge. Derek Graham and Alan Hammond brought the field to the green with Graham getting the jump to pull out in the lead. That would be the order for the first sixteen laps with third being fought over by several different drivers. A caution would bring the field back together and despite the “Delaware Restart” format Graham was unable to hold on to the lead as Hammond was able to get by him to claim the point. Graham struggled a bit for position as he found himself battling three wide for the runner up spot with Richie Simmons and Mike Dunn. As the laps ticked off the front five drivers seeming under a blanket continued to duke it out for the coveted top three spots. A couple more cautions bunched up the rest of the field giving Jordan Fornwalt having started from deep in the pack an opportunity to make his way to the front. When the checkers waved on lap forty Hammond crossed the line first his first win at the Ridge with Richie Simmons holding on for second and Jordan Fornwalt rounding out the final victory lane spot. Derek Graham salvaged a fourth-place finish, not bad when mere minutes before the start of the feature they were experiencing mechanical problems with the car and it was unknown if they would even be able to make the feature. Mike Dunn completed the top five.
In the Wells River Chevrolet DIRTcar Sportsman Coupes it finally happened! For the first time in over a decade a record twenty-one machines showed up for the main event. Earl Maxham’s hopes of a win with his up front starting position were quickly dashed when on lap two his drive shaft let go, sending him to the pits and the end of his night. Todd Hayward was the first winner of Maxham’s misfortune giving him the point which he held on to for the next twenty-six laps. Chris LaForest riding in second worked Hayward high and low and on the white flag lap he got his chance getting by Hayward bringing Jason Colbeth and Thomas Placey along with him. When the checkers waived a lap later that would be the finish with Melvin Pierson in fourth and Hayward holding on for fifth.
Laquerre’s Sports USAC DMA Midgets hit the track and didn’t stop until the checkers waived twenty laps later. Andy Barrows got the jump on the start getting by Jeff Champagne for the point and held the spot for all but the most important lap of every race. Joe Krawiec no stranger to the Ridge having claimed the first two championships under the Matczak stable, worked his way to the front of the pack and stole the lead from Barrows on the last lap bringing home the checkers for his new stable owner Ray Miller. Anthony Nocella in the Seymour machine in his first appearance of the season at the Ridge in 2017 worked his was to second with Krawiec’s team mate grabbing third. Barrows slipped back to fourth on the final lap with Adam Whitney taking home fifth.
With no threat of rain the skies decided to rain down C.A. Miller Limited Late Models, with last week’s numbers being tripled this week. A caution on lap one gave Bryan Campbell the point on the restart which he held on to till lap seven. Lap seven saw Toby Stark taking the point and being no stranger to the Ridge he held on to that point for the next fourteen laps. Campbell struggled to hold on to the second-place spot but when the checkers waived he had regained the bridges maid spot crossing the line in second. Coming home in third was Derek Stearns. Finishing fourth after having to pit with a flat tire with only four laps to go was Ryan Christian. JP Vallencourt completed the top five.
In Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinders Jason Porter seems on a roll as coming from the fourteen-starting point on the grid he worked his way to the front to his second win in a row. Porter took the lead from Sean Perron on lap thirteen and sailed on for the win. Perron come home in the brides made position with Jesse Durkee taking hope third. Buddy Welch and Rodney Davis rounded out the top five.
The newly created Wingless Sprints were on hand for their first visit of the season. Eight machines took the green with Derek Jeanson grabbing the checkers. Mike Horsch and Sam Comeau joined him in victory lane.
