BRADFORD, VT – It may have been raining at your house and you decided to stay home, but the skies cleared for racing to start at about 6:30 setting up the track for some very fast racing on Mekkelsen RV night. It goes to prove once again that Promoter CV “Butch” Elms WILL do everything in his power to get the show in despite surrounding conditions.
The visiting WYKR Sprint cars of New England were in the house for their second event of the season. The track conditions provided for a rough start for the field of twenty cars with a couple of flips in the early laps stopping the pace. Once the guys and gals figured out the track was wicked fast and to drive it accordingly they settled in to some great racing going green to checkers from lap three to the end. Kevin Chaffee doing double duty took the lead on the last restart holding on to the point until lap fourteen when Chris Donnelly grabbed the point and went on to score the win. Chaffee held on for second with Lacey Hanson coming home in third. Jacob Williams and rookie Matt Hoyt completed the top five.
Tommy Kimball felt pretty good with his car in the Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds as he brought his car around to take the green for their 35 lap main event. He was able to hold on to the point and survive three restarts before succumbing to Josh Sunn who has been anxious for a win all season. Sunn took the lead from Kimball on lap eighteen. Sunn would pull away from the field only having to hold off the hungry beasts behind him on a couple of restarts late in the race. Gary Siemons and Ryan Christian battled it out for second and were happy to see the restarts as knew it would be their best chance to knock off Sunn. Unfortunately for them Sunn was having nothing to do with losing the point and held them off to take home his first win of the season in the Sportsman Modes. Lapped traffic would be the demise of Christian and the blessing of last week’s feature winner Kevin Chaffee with one lap to go, as Chaffee would get by Christian to take the third and final victory lane spot. Siemons crossed the line in second with James Fadden and Todd Buckwold completing the top five.
Melvin Pierson makes it back to victory lane in the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes claiming his second win of the season the first repeat winner. Pierson starting from mid pack took advantage of a couple of early cautions to take the lead away from rookie Stan Otterman on lap seven. Pierson led the remaining 18 green to checkers laps over Matt Ellsworth who is still looking for his first win of the season. As the laps ticked off Jason Horniac worked his way to the front picking up Josh Harrington along the way. Horniac would be the lucky one to claim the final victory lane spot with Pierson and Ellsworth, leaving Harrington and Otterman to complete the top five.
The Laquerre Sports USAC DMA Midgets were off this week, returning next week June 18th.
Rookie Wayland Childs adds his name to the feature winners list in the Mike Rivers Automotive Limited Late Models. Starting on the pole track he was able to hold off the pack to grab his first win over Tim Martin and TJ Morse. Bryan King driving the Derrick Stearns machine came home in fourth with John Neddo taking the fifth place spot.
The Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinder had their madness night which means extra money on the line and laps to earn it. The field collected enough laps to run three twenty-three lap segments
Charlie Lakin earned the point of the first segment securing the most laps sponsored. Unfortunately luck wasn’t going quite Lakin’s way as by lap seven he had fallen out of the money spots. Jim Durkee dominated the first segment leading all but the first two laps and crossed the line first with Danny Doyle and Jesse Durkee right behind him. Mike Ryan and Buddy Welch crossed fourth and fifth. In Segment two the start was inverted from the on track cars from the first segment giving Bobby Bell the point. He held on until lap six when the caution waved. Danny Doyle grabbed the lead on the restart and went on to cross the line in first with Jim Durkee and Jesse Durkee in second and third. Buddy Welch and Jacob Roy took fourth and fifth. Segment three once again a starting line up from the prior segment two, put rookie Tyler Cloutier on the point which he held on to until lap seven when Buddy Welch grabbed the point. Buddy stayed on point beating out Mike Ryan and Jim Durkee at the line. Danny Doyle and Jesse Durkee completed the top five.
The combined finishes were added together giving Jim Durkee the overall winner beating out Danny Doyle by one point Buddy Welch grabbed third beating out Jesse Durkee by one point. Mike Ryan earned fifth overall.
